UR CS Club Minutes from September 9, 1999 Events: Speakers: Dr. Greenfield has agreed to give a presentation on artificial life. We are hoping to have him speak at one of our October meetings. Dr. Bax has agreed to speak about machine learning. We hope to hear his presentation sometime in November. Mike is coordinating the dates with them and they will be posted on our calendar. Social Events: Laser Tag is currently scheduled for the evening of October 2nd. We are inviting the CS150, CS221, CS222, and CS301 classes to this event. If you attend the meeting on October 30th, the CS Club will pay for you, if not, you're on your own (about $3.50 per game). We're trying to get a group rate - Tony is looking into the costs. We have plenty of transportation. Future Events: The Air and Space Museum of Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. has a new exhibit on computers. Theyt have older computers as well as videos of the pioneers of computers. The museum is free and we can arrange bag lunches from D-Hall. A few years ago the club had taken a trip to NASA-Langley. Blake will look into both of these possibilites. Programming Contest: The first 'Brain-Storming' meeting for the Computer Programming Contest will be held at UFA2106 on Saturday, September 18th at 7:00PM - dinner will be served. Please come with ideas for possible problems. Mike is looking for old ACM problems. Duke's CS Department holds high school programming contests, so we hope to use some of their old problems as examples. Other colleges that do this are Virginia Tech and one in Texas. We hope to run a preliminary contest for CS150 students at UR by the end of the semester. Community Service: Mrs. Hubbard suggested that we might volunteer at the Virginia Science Museum on Broad Street. They have a computer exhibit and she thought that we might be able to put our expertise to good use there. Hosting prospective CS students. Last meeting it was suggested that we contact the Admissions Office and offer our services in hosting prospective CS students. Both of these ideas would look good for our PR. The Web Page: Chris said he will be updating the CSClub Web Page ( http://www.mathcs.richmond.edu/urcsc ). Features will include a calendar of activities, the minutes from our meetings, a members list as well as anything else Chris finds worthy enough to post. The Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 16th at 4:00PM in Jepson 213.
